Offshore Oil & Gas Installation – Malaysia Waters

Offshore Oil & Gas Installation – Malaysia Waters

Confidential Offshore Operator
Offshore Production Platform, Malaysia

Ventilation integrity is mission-critical on offshore production platforms. In high-salinity marine environments, HVAC systems operate continuously to support accommodation modules, control rooms, and technical equipment spaces. Without structured cleaning, airborne salt and particulates accelerate corrosion and degrade airflow performance.

This project involved a comprehensive ventilation cleaning programme for an offshore installation operating in Malaysia waters.

System Coverage

The cleaning works covered multiple critical zones:

  • Living quarters ventilation system

  • Central control room air handling system

  • Technical equipment room ventilation

  • Galley exhaust ventilation

These systems serve both personnel welfare areas and mission-critical operational spaces.

Scope of Work
  • Accommodation module ventilation duct cleaning

  • Control room AHU internal cleaning

  • Fresh air intake cleaning

  • Exhaust duct and exhaust fan cleaning

  • Cooling coil surface cleaning

  • Confined space entry works

  • Pre- and post-cleaning photographic documentation report

Given the offshore context, all procedures were executed under strict safety supervision and confined space compliance protocols.

Issues Identified

Initial inspection revealed conditions typical of marine exposure:

  • Salt-laden dust accumulation within duct interiors

  • Restricted airflow to selected accommodation cabins

  • Surface contamination inside control room AHUs

  • Corrosive particulate build-up due to high-salinity environment

Marine particulates are particularly aggressive, accelerating metal degradation and compromising HVAC efficiency if left unaddressed.

Execution Challenges

Offshore execution requires structured coordination and regulatory discipline. Key challenges included:

  • Offshore mobilisation and mandatory safety induction

  • Strict PTW (Permit to Work) control procedures

  • Confined space compliance and monitoring

  • Work execution within scheduled shutdown window

  • Zero tolerance for disruption to live production operations

All cleaning activities were sequenced to align with operational safety and shutdown timelines.

Technical Execution

The cleaning methodology incorporated:

  • Mechanical duct agitation and negative air extraction

  • Coil surface restoration to recover heat exchange efficiency

  • Exhaust fan dismantling and deep cleaning

  • Fresh air intake decontamination to prevent salt reintroduction

  • Confined space ventilation control and atmospheric monitoring

Comprehensive pre- and post-cleaning documentation was compiled for asset record verification and compliance reporting.

Outcome
  • Ventilation airflow restored to intended performance levels

  • Improved indoor air conditions for offshore personnel

  • Reduced contamination risk to sensitive control room equipment

  • Structured cleaning report submitted for asset management records

  • Enhanced long-term system reliability in corrosive marine conditions

Why Ventilation Hygiene Matters Offshore

On offshore platforms, ventilation systems operate continuously within a high-salinity environment. Without preventive maintenance, internal contamination can lead to:

  • Reduced airflow performance

  • Accelerated corrosion of duct and coil surfaces

  • Degraded indoor air quality

  • Increased maintenance frequency and operational risk

Ventilation cleaning offshore is not cosmetic maintenance — it is asset protection and personnel welfare assurance.
